Schedule of Enclosures
Nothing further is held. The file is forwarded not on the strength of the disappearance, which remains a matter for the local service, but on the strength of the margin note at Annex B. Officers will read the note before the narrative.
Annex A
Subject was last seen leaving a private tennis club in company with her instructor. She did not return to the family residence that evening and has not been seen since.
The instructor was found two days later in an alley approximately four kilometres from the club. Throat cut. Wallet absent. The local service is carrying the death as a robbery and has not connected the two matters in writing.
The working theory of the local service is ransom. No demand has been received in twenty-one days. Field Office Marseilles notes, without comment, that twenty-one days is a long silence for a family of this kind.
Second photograph · not supplied by family
Same terrace · photographer not recorded
The second photograph was in the packet when it reached this desk and is not accounted for in the Field Office’s own schedule of enclosures. It shows the subject alone on the steps with a book, looking out at the water.
The question of who took it, and how long the subject was watched before she was taken, is not answered anywhere in this file.
Annex B
Three occasions are documented. All three were recorded at the time by household staff or by the family’s own correspondence, and none was reported to any service. The family attributes all three to a vivid imagination.
| No. | Age | Account as recorded |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | 9 | Refused to mount a horse she had ridden without incident for two seasons. Would not be persuaded and made a scene in the stable yard. The horse threw its rider later the same morning and broke a foreleg. Destroyed on the field. |
| 02 | 11 | Woke her governess at three in the morning and asked whether the lights would come back on soon. A storm took out power to half the village that night. The residence was not affected and the subject had no way of knowing the village was dark. |
| 03 | 13 | At a garden party, approached a man her parents had never met and told him his daughter was sick and needed him. His daughter died the following day. The man has not been traced and is not named in the family’s account. |
Margin note · Field Office Chief, Marseilles
This Section notes that none of the three accounts describes an action taken upon another mind. All three describe knowledge arriving early. There is no rated class in current use for a subject who knows a thing before it has happened.
